Review of Kwaidan (1965) by Rogerio . — 08 Jun 2009
Sugoi. This film is visually stunning. One gets the impression that they are watching a painting come to life, a moving canvas, much like the films of Peter Greenaway. The film consists of four Japanese ghost stories that are presented in a way that is truly Japanese; with meticulous attention to detail, an ethereal quality beyond comparison and set design that is more theatrical than cinematographic.
I enjoyed the entire movie, but my two favourite stories were "The Woman of the Snow" and "Hoichi the Earless." This masterpiece of filmmaking reminds me why I have such an affinity for Japan and Japanese culture.
