Review of Kurbaan (2009) by Venetia D — 09 Jan 2010
Recycling plots from Yash Raj Film's blockbuster ''FANAA'' & ''NEW YORK'', ''KURBAAN'' Directed by RENSIL D'SILVA has good intention but however it fails to strike chord. A thriller needs to be unpredictable throughout the proceedings but Since you have seen the two films mentioned above, you get a hint what would happen next. In other words, the film lacks the grip to glue you. There are some scenes too which will spin your head out like Ehsaan, being a most wanted terrorist in U.S.A roams freely despite Cops possessing criminal records of his. After 9/11 U.S.A has turned into a different country where even words like ''Bomb'' leads you into serious trouble. Then Saif-Kareena are characterized as the professors in University, funny thing is that they are seen drinking coffee together, romancing and kissing in the staffroom that too near the teachers. WOW!!! Which University is that, I want to take admission in it!!!!
Even the performance is way below the mark, SAIF ALI KHAN & KAREENA KAPOOR tries to infuse life in the roles but emotionally they fail to connect. The high calibre performance was from FANAA, Even though the film was criticised for it's inconsistent screenplay, AAMIR KHAN & KAJOL were highly appreciated for their stellar acting skills. They're role too are similar to Saifeena, but what makes it different is the intensity which AAMIR & especially KAJOL brought. It is VIVEK OBEROI who is complete revelation, forget his wobbly New York accent, he gives a performance which will remain in our memory for long time. OM PURI & KIRRON KHER lend credibilty in the role, however Kirron's afghani accents is very silly.
Techincally Kurbaan works thanks to ANURAG KASHYAP & NIRANJAN IYENGAR's dialogue, SALIM-SULIEMAN's rousing songs & HEMANT CHATURVEDI's finest cinematography. Still this positive points cannot camourflage the film from it's specious plot. RENSIL D'SILVA executes some scenes which are clapworthy but however direction falls flat.
In the nutshell, KURBAAN is a sure-shot disappointment from country's celebrated home production DHARMA PRODUCTION.
