Review of Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter (2014) by Juliette B — 07 Apr 2015
Add this one under odd with an interesting concept, focusing on Kumiko, played by Rinko the star of Babel and Pacific Rim, as she is starting to fall deeper into a self made delusion after stumbling on an old VHS tape of Fargo that the treasure that Steve Bucemi buried in the snow is actually real, and she goes on a mission to find it thinking that it is a great way to discover some meaning in her life.
The performance is very solid by Rinko, along with some decent cinematography and great inspiration which apparently is based on a real life story, but the Zellner's seem to be having a little trouble finding a consistent tone between somber Asian film and recapturing the quirky tone of the Coens, plus the ending of the film is pretty much open for some debate as well which begs the question for the audience why Kumikos state of mind isnt broken down more in the proceedings.
Intriguing and a coffee conversation piece.
