Review of Kong: Skull Island (2017) by Holi H — 30 Oct 2017
If you're looking for a 'meaning of life' type movie, with Oscar hopeful performances, this is not the movie for you. Not to say the actors are not amazing; they just don't act their socks off in this. They don't need to. Kong does that job for them. He is exquisite.
I can't think of anything I disliked about this movie. Blockbuster? Check. Lots of explosions? Check. Magnificent cinematography? Check. Beautiful locations? Check. Jump out of your seat moments? Check. Funny moments? Check. Amazing cast that manage to not overshadow and overact? Check. Pace not too fast, not too slow? Check. No overfluffing? Check.
It wasn't too long and seems to set up for the next movie well - the end reminds me of a Harry Potter-esque ending. Doesn't leave you hanging, but does have you excited for what's to come.
Jordan Vogt-Roberts, for his first big budget film, has managed to get the tone of this just right. I look forward to great things from him.
