Review of Knight of Cups (2015) by Orlando O — 25 Jun 2016
Terrence Malick's films are usually the work of art in his movies and usually with a deep meaning behind the picture. At times, his films are usually liked or hated, the characters speak to the minimum, walking in a set piece expressing their emotions or actions, and a narration that gives you some idea behind the whole thing.
Knight of Cups is that experimental art film, it may have that scenery clips and having the actor walking through some isolated environment or through a set piece. The theme does explore a depressed Hollywood big shot Rick (Christian Bale) who goes through a series of lifetime events of high class parties, and on the search for love and self discovery.
Knight of Cups just turns out to be a one long dull adventure of a person self discovering themselves. Terrence Malick loves to put all these clips of Los Angeles lifestyle, from the empty traffic roads, the waves at a beach, and a whole lot of seeing Christian Bale walking alone through every set and production.
Sure, there was a lot of meaning behind it but not exactly worth caring for, when the direction is very uninteresting.
