Mike Hammer (Ralph Meeker) investigates the murder of a female hitchhiker he picked up and whose captors almost managed to kill him in this almost surreal film. Often comes across as a parody of noir - or perhaps it is simply ineptly made? It is occasionally quite brutal but that doesn't save it from being dreary.
It isn't helped by Meeker being a terrible, non-charismatic actor. Actually, the acting is almost uniformly awful. I have no idea why this movie is considered a classic.
