Review of Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV (2016) by Masamuneriku — 18 Aug 2016
The movie is worth the watch for its CG alone. An enjoyable experience for JRPG/final fantasy fans, though it will disappoint casual moviegoers looking for solid storytelling.
Kingsglaive is a groundbreaking moment for CG fans with its amazing realism and well made motion capture. It shows us what the future of JRPG is capable of doing. I really hope others will follow and create something similar with other movies.
The characters in the movie are a mixed bag. Nyx and Regis were well animated (especially Regis). Lunafreya sometimes felt cold and expressionless. The rest of the cast could've definitely been given more polish with their animation.
The action scenes were great though cannot be considered epic. With all the great 'goosebumps-inducing' scenes in FF and KH series I was a bit disappointed that the battles weren't choreographed better.
Square enix has traditionally been great in creating worlds though sometimes stumble on storytelling. Now with a time limit of 110 minutes to tell a story instead of tens of hours with a game their weakness becomes apparent. The motives of the characters were at times convoluted and some of the actions taken were questionable.
The movie has successfully created the hype for fans to play FF XV; though not enough for the non-gamers and moviegoers to get into JRPG-style fantasy story.
