Review of King of California (2007) by Steven B — 05 Apr 2010
King of California started out tedious, but by the second half the pace got going and got me interested. I'm not sure how I feel about all the blatant commercial logos representing suburbia. It was distracting, but I guess it kind of worked.
The movie made me laugh a few times, usually because Michael Douglas's character's childlike wonder mixed with grown-up wisdom. He was supposed to be a recently rehabilitated mentally ill father to a wise-beyond her years 16-year-old daughter.
Her voiceover narration detracted from the narrative, while it attempted to draw parallels between the father's hidden treasure quest and the journal accounts of the conquistador Cortés who supposedly buried it.
On the whole, the plot of the movie seemed unoriginal, rehashing the feel of a few other indie directors. The barbecue party scene in particular, made me laugh at first, but felt like a random Coen brothers moment.
