The machinations and actions of the son of a woman who was spurned by her noble family, who dreams of becoming a Duke through deceipt and murder, spurred by revenge and pride. A gracefully mordant Ealing Studio comedy, with its poignant tongue in cheek humour and charming elegance.

The performances by the cast, including a suave Dennis Price in the leading role and Alec Guinness playing multiple characters, are splendid. The photography is marvellous. The overall language of the film itself is enough to demonstrate the influence of Ealing studio on cinema and make this one of the best British films ever made.
