Review of Kikujiro (1999) by Mary D — 08 Jun 2007
Slowly and carefully, Kitano takes us on a journey of heart and soul that becomes beautiful in an unintentional way. I laughed, I cried, I fell in love with a loud-mouthed jerk who finds himself partnered with a young boy searching for his mother.
To me, this movie speaks quietly to the humanity and need for companionship and meaning we all have, while never taking itself seriously. "Kiku" in "Kikujiro" is Japanese for "listen" - perhaps the most powerful lesson this movie teaches is that the answer to our prayers is sometimes right in front of us.
A subtle masterpiece.
