Review of Kikujiro (1999) by Paul N — 05 Dec 2008
One of the funniest films I have seen in recent memory. Meticulously constructed sight-gags and comedic editing allow you to assemble much of the comedy yourself, without the film ever feeling obscure or complicated.
Takeshi gives us an incredibly despicable, petty character and manages to make him lovable and even admirable, without actually giving him a massive arc or dramatic "moment of revelation". A slightly redundant third act still delivers the laughs and makes an unsentimental happy ending possible, but I can't help feeling there was a point earlier in the story which was an ideal cut-off point for a more ambiguous, bittersweet finale.
