Review of Kika (1993) by Reynald C — 01 Jul 2007
Almodovar is brilliant! He was able to merge comedy, drama, tragedy and one heck of a watchable film.
Almodovar is known as the director for feminine issues and it is clear here. We are introduced to corrupt men, impotent husbands with murderous tendencies and a son who has an insane mommy's boy complex. And how about the women? Well, they just shrug all those issues off and say Que sera sera.
As with his other films, Kika is flowing with colours that pop and music that accentuates the mood: be it comedy to some of the most extremely odd conversations I have ever encountered on film.
Midway through the movie, the audience will be treated to possibly the most insane and hilarious rape scene I could ever imagine. A rape scene being hilarious? That preposterous! But surely, it works here.
Unfortunately though, I felt that the closing 20 minutes was a complete disservice to the rest of the movie as it felt like it was meandering and wasn't as focused as the rest of the scenes. It almost was quite anti-climactic but then again, did I mention that funny rape scene?
