Review of Kidulthood (2006) by Mari J — 23 Jun 2008
Why bother? I mean, I've never understood why to make a film, write a book etc. which somebody else has done before and the predecessor doesn't completely suck?! In this case I'm of course referring to Larry Clark's "Kids" from the year 1995: the plot and everything is pretty much the same the whole way! I do understand that some movies are turning points as Clark's "Kids" in this genre and e.
g. Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction" in crime&action flicks and therefore they get lots of followers. That's not a bad thing but there should be at least some originality or vision of your own.
There are some good parts in "Kidulthood" though, for example the montage where "The Street's" "Blinded by the Lights" is singing in the background and Trife and his ex-girlfriend are separately thinking their lives.
It's also a good solution that the story is told in just one day - in that way the film respects it's roots the proper manner i. e. ultimately the Greek tragedies: there is a fine line between being a copycat or an educated filmmaker.
WATCHED: June 23, 2008. PS I watched this because I watch "Skins" from the telly.
