Review of Kidulthood (2006) by Kevin R — 24 Jun 2014
I want you to carve a 'C' from the corner of his eye to the corner of his mouth.
In west London, a group of kids are growing up in a rough neighborhood and their lives are being destroyed in part by their decisions and in part by bullying. One girl can't take it anymore and kills herself. Some kids take this act as a chance to stand up and others hide further in their hole. One set of kids who try to stand up discover that recently after breaking up, a child is on the way and they're about to become mom and dad. How will that change their plan of action?
"I got bigger things to worry about than what you can do to me.".
Menhaj Huda, director of Queer as Folk 2, Everywhere and Nowhere, Comedown, and television episodes of Queer as Folk, Murphy's Law, and Young Dracula, delivers Kidulthood. The storyline for this picture is interesting and reminded me of Kids (just not as good). The dialogue was entertaining and the characters were fairly interesting. The cast delivers solid performances and includes Nicholas Hoult, Adam Deacon, Noel Clarke, Aml Ameen, Red Madrell, Jaime Winstone, and Femi Oyeniran.
"Fuck him and this fucking baby!".
I came across this film on Netflix and was surprised that this scored 4 out of 5 stars by Netflix viewers. This was entertaining and reminded me a lot of a European Kids. It had some of the same points and references with a straightforward plot. I wouldn't call this a masterpiece but it is worth seeing for sure.
"You're not a bastard. You're a cunt.".
Grade: C+/B- (6.25).
