Review of Kes (1970) by Eddie A — 30 Jan 2008
A miserable story. Being bullied at home and at school, Billy found his spirit in the kestrel. Very much impressed by the description of a kestrel "not bothered by anyone" and "worth respect".
Billy is the Kes. He certainly worth respect in this cold society. He can fly high. Irony to have the Bible verse of not missing one sheep from one hundred. The teacher acts as a positive moral force, of the filmmaker, to give some hope.
But the film is pessimistic. It breaks our hearts. An English classic, though I did not catch any word of the West Riding dialect in the film.
