Review of Kelly's Heroes (1970) by Dave R — 06 Nov 2009
Really fun World War II action film, featuring a great and memorable cast. Particularly memorable is Donald Sutherland's 1940s hippie Oddball. I know that sound ridiculous, and indeed it is ridiculous, yet this film pulls it off superbly.
The film is basically The Good The Bad and The Ugly in World War II, and Clint Eastwood once again plays a laconic anti hero in search of riches during a time of war. The showdown at the end also recalls Eastwood's earlier spaghetti westerns.
Telly Savalas is also very good. The pacing might seem a little slow by modern standards, but I think that might have more to do with the attention spans of modern audiences than fault on the side of the filmmakers! This is a great film to kick back and watch on a lazy afternoon.
