Review of Keanu (2016) by K Nife C — 17 May 2016
Comedy films are not what I usually go to see. Most of the time, I see it as a plus that there is humor in a film, but the reason I don't go to comedy films are because in the past ten years I started noticing two trends in comedies that I severely detest.
The first was substituting awkwardness for punchlines. The second was substituting jokes with being mean-spirited and/or physical injury. Now, I won't say that this film is exempt from physical gags.
There is gang violence, and who would pass up an opportunity to make some hilarious murders! Key and Peele are blerds in LA who get a drug-dealer's cat, then it's stolen, and they have to pose as gang members to get the cat back.
It is a very simple premise, and they do well at it. Prior to this, I had seen a few bits that they did on Comedy Central and Fargo and I didn't find them all that funny. This movie has some very funny moments, but what makes it work is that it is a good-natured film about a very dark, violent world.
The downside is that some of the gags get tiresome, some of the humor falls flat, and I'm not really sure who this was made for. People on Reddit?
