Review of Kagemusha (1980) by Steve M — 08 Dec 2011
This epic tale of a Japanese clan's hold on power and the extent to which they'll go to maintain it wasn't the masterpiece I was expecting. The scope of the picture, while having some great set pieces and large scale moments, wasn't as "epic" as I thought it would be.
And the way the main character was written/portrayed didn't quite sit with me. Is he the bad thief, the goof, the righteous, the honourable, the failure, the cunning or any of the other multiple personas that seem to have been attributed to him from scene to scene? But despite not being quite what I had expected, Kagemusha was still an entertaining war story from a brilliant filmmaker.
