Review of Kabei: Our Mother (2008) by Sooty M — 27 Sep 2010
Okay, I get it. Not every Japanese person on the planet agreed with the war, and yes it sucks to oppose your emperor, god almighty, in the face of fervent nationalism. But in comparison to the atrocities committed against non-Japanese people, the treatment of Tobei pales considerably, not that it discounts his suffering anymore than someone else's, but somehow, I could not relate well to the characters.
I can't see that this film was centered on the mother entirely either. It is more about events surrounding a small Tokyo family.
