Review of K-PAX (2001) by Diogo K — 15 Dec 2009
To be honest, I'm surprised that this movie won me over the way it did. It's manipulative and a bit simple-minded, but it has a lot going for it. It's very well directed by Iain Softley, who gives it an interesting visual flavor and puts the actors at the center of his focus.
The two lead actors are what make it stand out for me. Jeff Bridges turns in a strong, assured piece of acting with some powerful moments, but this is Kevin Spacey's film and he's the one who makes it memorable.
Spacey is one of the great American actors, and this is some of the most layered and dedicated work of his career. He deserved an Oscar nomination for this performance, and his character exploration really made me fall for this movie.
It's an imperfect piece of writing, but I highly recommend it just to see two skilled actors perform together.
