Review of Just Buried (2007) by Yolandie G — 29 Aug 2009
As far as dark/black comedies go, this is one of the better films to see. Yes, it's "insane" and "quirky", but that comes with the genre. I know dark comedies are a niche thing, so I don't expect high ratings from most in general. However, if you've enjoyed this genre in the past, 'Death at a Funeral' and the likes, this should be a must see.
Jay Baruchel plays the main character, an awkward twenty something that gets nose bleeds when he's nervous, is afraid of death, and of course there in inherits a funeral home after his father's passing. This will setup the rest of the film, and the situational comedy prominent in the genre, as well as the expected irreverent and crude themes. This film might be a bit more on the darker side, and a harder R rating, due to its ongoing edge and occasional gore.
I think Oliver (Baruchel) was a bit overacted at times, as well as the widow (Reagan Pasternak), and their characters can get a bit tedious. The deputy sheriff can wear on you after awhile too.
Rose Byrne is great as Roberta, the funeral home's mortician and the county coroner. She gives probably her best performance since The Rage in Placid Lake. I think the off-beat roles are a strong point for her and I'd rather see her in an independent film like this where she can be more 'free', than one of her blockbuster roles such as 28 Weeks Later, Sunshine or Knowing.
I don't want to get stuck on the cast, but who the hell is Sergio Di Zio, and why has he not done a movie since? He did an amazing job as Oliver's beer drinking, public urinating, Catholic priest brother, despite such a minor role.
Overall, it is a well written, well directed, solid film. It had clever dialogue, some witty well placed one-liners, a few startles, and even the twists are played off well. The movie keeps you thinking without leaving any glaring plot holes or being too obvious.
If you're in the minority that likes dark comedies, such as myself, go rent this one and give it a chance.
