Review of Just Buried (2007) by Jason D — 21 Mar 2009
Just Buried is an interesting dark comedy about a young, unusual man (Jay Baruchel) who inherits his estranged father's bankrupt funeral home. Amidst trying to cope to small town life and running a failing business, he meets the beautiful mortician (Rose Byrne) who befriends him.
Things get interesting when they accidentally kill a jogger one night while driving drunk, thus leading to a series of unfortunate events as more people die who get too close to their secrets. The story and assorted murders eventually lead to a dark and gloomy climax, as well as a steady transformation of the two main characters who were almost completely different people in the beginning.
The film started out kinda slow, but steadily picked up and become more and more entertaining and engrossing to watch. Some of the deaths and small amounts of special effects are better than expected (especially the death involving the peeping tom town celebrity).
The cast does a fine job, especially the two leads. Native Graham Greene has a very nice and fun role in this film; it's good to see him still doing work, since he was such a bigger star in the 90's.
Overall, much better than I thought it would be.
