Review of Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) by Warren S — 26 Jun 2008
This is a good movie. I thought it might be boring (and it might be to some) but I was riveted and could not believe how quickly the 3 hours passed by. Fantastic performances from Spencer Tracy, Max Schell, (won best actor Oscar) Judy Garland and Monty Clift (so different from anything I'd ever seen him do) and Burt Lancaster.
Also... a very young William Shatner in this film. At first, you are thinking, of course these men are guilty and they show the films of the holocaust, which are hard to watch (the real thing). But after awhile, you see Lancaster's remorse and you begin to see how the whole country went along with Hitler because they felt they had no other choice.
You start to see the German point of view from Marlene Dietrich and the pressure from even the US and the military. Some said they didn't know what was going on. But Tracy brings us back to what really matters at the end and his final scene with Lancaster is powerful.
