One of my favorite Zhang Yimou and Gong Li collaborations. Again, no obvious heroes and villains in this one. Old man marries and controls young woman, but young woman is unsatisfied and has love affair with humble and sexy manual laborer, love child born to the young lovers, old may fears a sad and lonely death, but wait .
. . there's a sinister twist.
