Review of Jojo Rabbit (2019) by Kirkender — 06 Nov 2019
It's Dr. Strangelove for empathic people with hope, who understand the world isn't just a binary of good vs evil. Its wildly imaginative and paradoxically seriously grounded. Jojo Rabbit is a film that actually explores what it is like to live under authoritarian times without making the asinine judgements most films of this type do.
People are nuanced, complicated shades of gray and aren't entirely in control of what we do. People don't make a choice to join an evil force or a good force, they do what feels like makes sense to them.
We join an emotional journey of an unquestioning boy who has his world expanded just a tiny bit and instead of doubling down on his reality he accepts that there are other truths and moves forward. It's a beautiful, poetic satire that doesn't talk down to people and understands that all humans are doing their best, whatever that may mean.
It's a truly human story of war.
