Review of Johnny Mnemonic (1995) by Kyle J — 19 Feb 2011
Cyberpunk gets a lobotomy in this ridiculous adaptation of of the Short Story by William Gibson. Honestly, there are some movies from the mid nineties sci-fi phase that hold up surprisingly well. This is not one of them.
If you want to know what Keanu's acting was like before he learned that one mood from the Matrix, here it is. He is terrible, though the dialogue doesn't give him much to work with, hearing him spout these lines about gigabytes and intrawebz (especially the monologue at the end in the junk yard about the finer things in life) will make you want to punch your TV, no matter how expensive it is.
Action scenes are bland, exposition is painfully dull and unending and they completely under use Henry Rollins who plays a glasses wearing scientist who gets killed with little to no effort. Most of the special effects are derivative of the far superior film "Lawn Mower Man" and don't get me started on the weird techno dolphin.
...thing. Just a complete waste of time. Skip it.
