Review of Johnny Guitar (1954) by Adam G — 13 Feb 2009
The intricate blending of melodrama and western here makes for not only a unique viewing experience but a plethora of self-reflexion and analysis about genre and gender. Joan Crawford is electric, dominating every single scene with an admirable naturalism; she outplays everyone else, and this serves the film well.
Nicholas Ray was a master at climaxes, and the violent and surprising ending of this film is no exception. Belongs among the superlative American westerns.
