Review of John Dies at the End (2013) by Naga R — 27 Jan 2013
All over the place, but in a good way. So it is a little bit difficult to get into the specificities of the plot here, but it involves necromancy, spiritual exorcists, alternate universes, aliens and a new drug that goes by the handle Soy Sauce.
I would say that this movie is out there, but that would be a massive understatement. This is like David Lynch and David Cronenberg collaborated to direct a low-budget hallucinogenic sci-fi movie. If that sounds like your thing (because trust me, this is as niche of a film as it sounds like), then by all means check it out.
I suppose the acting could have been better (Paul Giamatti is the biggest name here (and is easily the best actor), but he has a very small role), but I did really dig the sense of humor about it. It's so wildly different and uniquely bizarre that I don't really have anything to compare it to.
I know I like it, but I need some time to fully digest it in order to be able to determine to what degree; I write these reviews as soon as possible after watching, but this is the first movie in a long time where I feel like I need some time to process it to fully make up my mind.
If there's anything that I can say about it, it is that I am very interested to read the novel of which this is based off of, as there is a lot of good material and abstract concepts.
