Review of John Dies at the End (2013) by Trond H — 15 Jun 2014
This entire film is nonsensical and ridiculous. Drugged out comedies tend to be funny for about ten minutes following which they become tedious and repetitive. This film rather bucks the curve by being batshit insane and changing the direction of the plot about once every ten minutes. By the end you have no idea what has happened through most of the plot which I suspect replicates the experience of a drug trip rather well.
This film is trying to blend two genres: horror and comedy. As a comedy it works pretty well in its nonsensical sort of way. As a horror film it can't claim to be that effective since it just isn't that scary. The drug trip angle with the distorted reality could have been very disturbing indeed but it is generally played for laughs instead. And there are a number of very big laughs here indeed.
The name is also a lie since John is both alive and dead at various points throughout the film.
