Review of John Carter (2012) by John Y — 18 Mar 2013
Review of 3D version - It was planned and shot for 3D, therefore See It in 3D! Do Not believe the film is as poor as the naysayers make it out to be (I've seen much worse movies that were being "Fresh" rated by these very same naysayers).
This movie is actually a better-than-average Classic Sci-Fi Fantasy / Adventure. Taylor Kitsch gives a Clint Eastwood-esque portrayal of Confederate Captain John Carter. Lynn Collins is stunning as a real-life Princess Jasmine-type character.
The dialog and character development of the CGI / Martian main (Sola, Tars Takas, and Tal Hajust) characters were somewhat rushed and abbreviated. In 3D, the visuals were Beautiful. Plot pacing on Mars events were a bit quick.
The Biggest Flaw of this movie? It's the Title! (Look at the movie's poster on the Left - see what I mean?). From a marketing standpoint, the over-simplified, name-only is a says-nothing title.
The Title "John Carter" was a Financial Disaster, and I believe was mostly responsible for dooming ticket sales. A title like "The Martian Warrior John Carter" or even the original title buried at the end of the End Credits "John Carter of Mars" would have been a better marketing hook.
In any event, the film is worth viewing more than once and actually sinks in better, since there is a lot going on. Recommend seeing on a Premium Channel in 3D HD or get the 3D Blu-Ray.
