Review of Jindabyne (2006) by Zarinah H — 25 Jan 2008
A slow-paced yet very involving film centred around a small community in Australia called Jindabyne. Four men go off on a fishing trip, only to discover the remains of a young woman who has been murdered.
Instead of immediately reporting it to the police, they decide to tehter her body and continue fishing for a day and a half. When they return, the police, not to mention their wives and townsfolk are horrified by their callousness.
Esp so with Laura Linney's character who is ashamed of her husband's [Gabriel Byrne's] actions. Their marriage crumlbes, and in the larger context, many questions surface: do we owe anything to the dead? Issues of racism are raised too.
An emotionally gripping human drama.
