Review of Jindabyne (2006) by Derek B — 08 Jul 2010
The cruel ignorance of a fishing party is exposed, too intent on enjoying their lads day away to respect the human dignity of a murder victim. Themes of cultural misunderstanding are handled quite sympathetically but it comes across as a bit too worthy and liberal.
The refusal to "solve" the murder makes the story end on a dissonant note, whereas the otherwise reconciliatory tone isn't quite credible.Gabriel Byrne is good. It reminded me a little of the Elfriede Jelinek book Greed, though that is a considerably tougher study of some broadly similar sorts of ideas.
