Review of Jigsaw (2017) by Jon C — 31 Oct 2017
After a 7 year absence the 'Saw' franchise is back and in top form.
After the lackluster reception with the previous film back in 2010 directors Michael and Peter Spierig fashion another follow-up/reboot of sorts for a whole new generation of fans.
Everything from the blood to the traps to the numerous plot twists is all here and there are plenty of cool callbacks to earlier entries.
Taking place 10 years after the death of John Kramer a new game has been set up featuring 5 players while the police force is busy putting the pieces together who's actually orchestrating it.
As the bodies pile up everyone asks the same question, is Jigsaw really back from the grave or is there another copycat out there taking advantage of his MO?
The movie opens much differently than other entries and we're immediately thrust into the carnage; 5 victims have to confess their deepest darkest secrets to cleanse their souls, several of them actually do get backstories to crimes they've committed although it's not necessary.
The police procedural section of the film does make things fascinating as to who's actually behind the new game, is it someone on the inside?
Even though the 5 victims aren't that memorable and some of the acting isn't high caliber the Spierig Brothers pull off a hell of a twist towards the end.
Might have been better to not show their cards so early in the middle but it's far better than movie 7's attempt.
This chapter is also surprisingly short compared to the rest but I'm happy it doesn't slog so much so we can get right into it.
Not a lot of familiar faces in the cast list, maybe some TV actors.
If they plan to make more of these in the future then they can still fix a few things along the way I hope.
The Halloween tradition is back thank goodness, Jigsaw is back where he belongs :).
