Review of Jesus Christ Superstar (2000) by Colleen T — 03 Dec 2008
Though I prefer many stage adaptations to either JCS movie, this millennium version is worlds better than the 1973 version. It's modernized, yes, but it's also deeper, darker, and depicts the relationship between Jesus and Judas far more believably.
Glenn Carter does a great job as Jesus (even if at times his falsetto grates). Jerome Pradon takes a lot of getting used to, but his portrayal of Judas as a spoiled child is new and, truth be told, what Tim Rice envisioned while writing the lyrics.
Mary is fabulous, and Pilate is phenomenal. Though "King Herod's Song" is sickeningly awful, the rest of the film compensates.
