Review of Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) by Fredrick R — 23 Apr 2011
It's pretty debatable that Jesus Christ Superstar should have even been turned into a movie. It's horribly dated, and ends up looking like Studio 54 in the Israeli desert.
Comparisons with the concept album and Broadway show are unavoidable where Ian Gillian seems perfect, Ted Neely overly hams it up as Jesus. Murray Head is great as Judas in the original but Carl Anderson clearly gives it his own dimension.
What still a eye-opener till this day is the Big Gay Vegas Cabaret depiction of Herod, which surely had to be a shock in the early 70s.
