Review of Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) by Jake C — 03 Apr 2018
As a Christian, I was reluctant to watch a film that depicts the passion of the Christ in a thoroughly modern, anachronistic way. By the time I finished Jewison's underappreciated masterpiece, I had a change of heart.
JCS was titillating, irreverent, contemplative, human and divine all at the same time. The actors who played Jesus, Mary Magdalene and Judas were exceptionally talented and moving. Neeley's Gethsemane was an emotional highlight, with a very human Jesus praying, submitting to the will of his Father.
The anguish is clearly felt in Neeley's wailing, screaming solo. Anothe stand-out production is Herod's Song, which perfectly displays the equally comedic and tragic tone of the scene. Overall, watching the film becomes more than an entertainment.
It is a surreal and spiritual experience that only adds to the discourse on the meaning of the Cross.
