Review of Jerry Maguire (1996) by Baurushan J — 02 Jul 2013
The story is about Tom Cruise starring as the title character who is an agent with a major sports management firm. He's also an enthusiastic, successful negotiator who everybody likes but everything goes downhill for him as there's something wrong with what he's doing, Jerry has a serious crisis of conscience.
During a sleepless night, Jerry writes a memo calling on himself and his colleagues to think more about the long-term welfare of the clients they represent and less about immediate profits. He sends this to over 100 companies and is waiting for an answer.
While everyone around him applauds the sentiment, Jerry's superiors think his ideas are bad for business; Jerry is fired, and, rather than standing in solidarity with him, his "friends" in the firm scramble like sharks to claim Jerry's clients.
At the end of his last day, the only people willing to join Jerry as he strikes out on his own are staff accountant Dorothy Boyd played by Renee Zellweger, a single mother who is secretly in love with Jerry and Rod Tidwell played by Cuba Gooding Jr.
, an American football player whose pride and arrogance have gotten in the way of his reaching his potential. This movie was recieved well by audiences and gained a cult following because of its memorable dialogue like "SHOW ME THE MONEY!", "You complete me.
", "You had me at hello." and "Help me, help you,". The film gained five Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor for Cruise and Best Supporting Actor for Gooding Jr.
winning in the Best Supporting Actor category. It was Cruise's second Oscar nomination after Born On The Fourth of July unfortunately, he didn't win neither. Tom Cruise was perfect as the title character as he carried the movie out by himself half the time and of course he's fucking nuts.
This movie is a comedy so it did make me laugh. I had a lot of fun watching this movie. Whilst R-Rated and aimed for adults, it's still a light-hearted, charming, humorous drama and also a great sports movie without following the predictable Rocky formula.
Jerry Maguire gets a 10/10.
