A grand epic movie w/out a grand epic story to justify it. There's an overture and an intermission, for gods sake. Visually, it's stunning. It makes for a beautiful travelogue. But there's never really a plot.
Just a string of minor episodes. Also Robert Redford is strangely stilted. Words like "critter" do not roll convincingly off his tongue. Especially compared to the naturalness Will Geer (having fun as his nutty mountaineer mentor) brings to his role.
Also, Redford never seems believable as a loner. I can imagine what Clint Eastwood could have done w/ this. It's not a bad film, just slow going.
