Review of Jenny's Wedding (2015) by Hanneguacamole — 04 Aug 2015

I saw the preview for Jenny's Wedding and I was excited. I knew I was getting my hopes up for a Katherine Heigl romcom and I knew it would be bad, but I couldn't help it. I hoped we would see an actual lesbian couple normally on the movie screen. But instead, this movie lacks any romance and I'm left wondering why Kitty and Jenny are even getting married at all.

I think this movie is sexist and homophobic. First, we are convinced that Jenny will be happy if she gets married. It's all her family can talk about! For the amount of times the mother says she's like her daughter, it shocks me to see her so disgusted when all Jenny's doing is being herself. I understand that someone "coming out" can be a shock, but the reality is that it's 2015. I know situations such as the one portrayed in the movie do happen, and worse, but the parents never fully seem to accept their daughter for who she is. And this is supposed to be a comedy. Homophobia isn't funny.

There was significantly more screentime shown of the parents and the sister than there was of Jenny and Kitty – the namesake of the movie. Bickering is the main focus and no matter how hard it tried it would not be funny. In no other romcom would more time be spent on the family than the actual couple getting married, but of course when the focus is gay we have to get in our straightness somewhere!

It would have been so cool to have a mainstream movie like this without any of the family issues. After watching, I imagine the target audience is older parents or family members that are "struggling" with someone's sexual orientation and trying to excuse their blatant homophobia. A wasted opportunity.
