Review of Jennifer's Body (2009) by Dark P — 11 May 2011
(3.9 out of 5 Stars) On the surface, it's a demonic teenage slasher pic done right -- witty dialogue, exciting scenes, but if "The Exorcist" is an allegory of some of the frightening changes a girl goes through during puberty, "Jennifer's Body" is really a tale of the psychological and sexual aftermath of being a victim of rape.
The changes which Megan Fox's character undergoes is stark but also what is expected from the profile of a victim of a violent sexual crime. The heavy theme itself is weaved into the horror movie with a flair of Sam Raimi humor (there was even a nod to him in the form of an "Evil Dead" poster, if you keep your eyes open) -- all done without the usual conventions of horror.
It's a smart movie by the people who brought you "Juno" -- the movie is about sex but doesn't use any explicit gratifications, which is where it may have misled many of the horror audiences.
