Review of Jem and the Holograms (2015) by Anne R — 22 Oct 2015
As someone who is definitely old enough to have loved this in it's original format (Hasbro nailed it), this movie was amazeballs.
The negatives: The plot as accurately described by many reviewers was 'lite' in substance. Next, Juliette Lewis: why the crap did you let them cast Ryan Guzman as your son? Not on his youngest day (which will always be today, think about it), is he young enough to be your son, that was just crazy. That was only mildly less disturbing than the romantic interest point in the movie which puts a conservatively 22 year old record 'intern' in love with a high school kid, uh gross.
The positives: The plot, while disturbingly lite did stay very true to the original story, if taking some literary license with certain points. The songs are bubblegum pop at their finest (I mean that in a good way, stop hating hipsters). The message, if a bit heavy handed, is a good one #girlpower, and the use of some real and some crafted You Tube posts throughout was a well placed film device that added to the story and to the idea behind it.
BLATB (Bottom Line at the Bottom), this movie was great and while I totally get why the mid range age group who don't A) remember the original or B) still believe in the impossible with childlike wonder won't get it, all the A's and B's out there will love it.
