Part I to Claude Berri's adaptations of the novels, while these two films (which includes Manon des Sources) are typically fatalistic in that French/European mode, they are also the most human tales I know set to film.
Cannot watch one without the other. Sad, but truthful story of family, betrayel, love, and all the pieces of mortality that make us real. Ultimately redemptive, though that's open to interpretation.
Which makes the stories even more moral, in my opinion.
