Review of Jean de Florette (1986) by Alex P — 01 May 2012
The film that launched a thousand Stella Artois ads. This film is utterly gorgeous and makes incredible use of the French countryside. The story brilliantly evokes a whole range of emtions but is ultimately an incredibly sad tale, with the eponymous Jean's tragically misplaced optimism in constant conflict with the harshness of rural reality and also the machinations of his selfish neighbours.
This really is an excellent, touching film. I'm already looking forward to seeing the second part: Manon des Sources.
