Review of Jean de Florette (1986) by Jane M — 10 Apr 2008
Boasting a colorful palette of pastels on its cover and essentially a story revolving around an aspiring flower farmer, Jean de Florette is the sort of movie red-blooded, meat-eating guys like myself steel our sensibilities to. I went into this movie swearing that I wouldn't allow myself to falter against any saccharine melodrama or any other sort of emotional manipulation.
Boy was I wrong - this movie is beautifully directed in a seemingly effortless way and will move you to tears without intentionally tugging at your heart strings. This is testament that great acting and super storytelling trump spectacle.
