Review of Jean de Florette (1986) by Gaston P — 14 Apr 2008
IMHO, Berri's tour de force. This and the sequel, Manon des sources should really be thought of as one movie broken into two parts. Comes close to perfection as I've seen in the telling of a tragedy.
Performances all around were remarkable and, in particular, Yves Montand approaches his role with such subtlety that you don't realize the whole range and depth of emotions he not only infuses into the role, but also into the viewer, because his performance draws you into the film so deeply.
