Review of JCVD (2008) by Bach P — 03 Jun 2009
This is not the same Jean-Claude Van Damme we knew in the past - well, sorta. The kicks and punches are all still there, but this time Van Damme gets personal, diving into his personal career and showing a side of himself that few have ever seen.
He fearlessly pokes fun at himself in "JCVD", taking hits about his career, life, and love choices - fortunately, he's a good sport about it. Van Damme may not be the greatest actor in the world, but he is a fascinating character nonetheless and delivers a fine performance.
The film as a whole is a mixed bag. At it's best, it is light and fast, full of energy and entertainment. The first half of "JCVD" is just great, but the film loses some steam as the film drags on - even in it's tight 97 minute run time.
It's no "Citizen Kane", but "JCVD" is a fun ride that's worth a rental.
