Review of Jason and the Argonauts (1963) by Maureen S — 17 Jan 2010
Great set pieces - especially talos the tall statue and the legendary skeletons. Stop motion is way better than most cgi - apart from gollum and some others. Stop motion has character and you can feel the work that has been put in.
But the bits in between the set pieces drag a bit, they are better than clash of the titans and at least you believe in jason as a hero. But its still lacking any wit or a sense of fun, everyone is a bit too serious and stagey which kept me from really engaging with them as they go on their journey.
Then it just goes off at the end a bit too swiftly. In for example lord of the rings or hellboy where the characters are on a fantasy kinda quest the action is the icing on the cake as we travel with characters who feel real.
Here you always feel that theyre acting and you count the seconds until a creature arrives to liven things up. But undeniably I agree that the harryhausen moments are amazing and will last forever. The bits inbetween not so much.
