Review of Jane Eyre (2011) by John M — 26 Sep 2011
Although this film is beautifully made with great performances Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender but the casting highlight was undoubtedly Judi Dench. Fassbenders performance although very strong was let down, in my opinion, by his accent. At times he seemed to speak with a light yorkshire accent which seemed right on the money but for 80% of the time I felt like it had be dropped.
My main fault with this film was that it felt the story was missing pieces of story most notably the first and thrid act. On top of this I felt that the film failed to deliver a sense of time, scenes on more than one ocassion would be seperated by several months.
The question you have to ask yourself is with an existing catalogue of 10 or so adaptation on television and film. The story is much better told over a a longer period, for example the 4hr mini series also produced by the BBC 5 years ago.
