Review of Irreversible (2002) by Tim M — 20 Aug 2009
The meandering, spinning, wobbly camera gave me a headache. After 20 minutes of migraine inducing audiovisuals the viewer is rewarded with a nice fire extinguisher beating scene. It's shot backwards, Memento style.
The rape scene has only one angle and is monotonous. Many people find it disturbing, it's boring is what it is. Too much camera movement, then none, only makes the stillness all the more stagnant.
A great thing about the backwards scenes is the foreshadowing that one might not notice until after a few viewings, if at all, are obvious. There seems to be plot holes; Being pregnant and going home alone late at night after pushing away two guys that wanted to escort her.
Letting a woman you love go alone late at night is a metropolis. Doesn't make sense.
