Review of Irreversible (2002) by James M — 02 Jan 2010
I find it difficult to rate this movie. It definitely has got qualities and some pretty good acting. On the other hand however elements of the script are fully unconvincing. So I end up by giving it 6/10.
Just like Memento, this is a movie that is going back in time. The first major scene is set in a gay bar where the two leading characters beat up a guy. This is scene is full of raw violence, and the idea that two guys can go into such a bar and do this without anybody reacting does not seem to be very realistic. The film then explains the reason for all this violence.
Almost all scenes are long, some using technology to make one long "shot" out of various takes. This is well done. There is also a very tender scene near the end of the movie, which is a lot more convincing than some of the violence and racism shown earlier.
